How can I get started?

Schedule a free price optimization consultation with one of our Sales Engineers here! During the call, we’ll discuss how your pricing strategy can fit into your overall growth goals, and how Tontine can deliver a quick ROI win for your bottom line.

What makes Tontine unique?

We could list a dozen of reasons, but these are the five most important when it comes to delivering value for you!

  1. Built just for Shopify — 100% native integration and compatibility ensures that your customers receive a cohesive experience from start to finish, and minimizes the chances of them knowing whether they’re in the test or control cohort (to ensure the scientific validity of the price test)! Tontine works with both Shopify and Shopify Plus brands.
  2. Accessible — almost every other A/B testing platform that delivers the same level of sophisticated analysis requires annual contracts of at least $50,000 per company (not to mention, you’ll have to hire an in-house data analyst to decipher the results!). Tontine delivers the same value at a minuscule fraction of the cost.
  3. Easy Setup & Use — by harnessing the power of data science behind the scenes, Tontine gives you the benefits of an in-house pricing expert with the click of a button. Built by data scientists, for non-experts.
  4. Price Optimization Experts — every customer is paired with a Price Optimization Expert (for free) who will deliver white-glove concierge support so you’re never left questioning on how you should craft your pricing strategy, the value you’re receiving from Tontine, and almost anything else you can think of.
  5. Scientifically-valid Results — by split testing your customers in real-time (vs. swapping prices daily/weekly), Tontine eliminates any guesswork and confounding variables that may result in you picking the wrong winning price!
Why can’t I just duplicate product pages and send 50% of my visitors to each page using ads or Google Optimize/Optimizely/VWO?

Tontine is the only price testing app in the market that allows for scientific price testing and is built just for Shopify merchants. In other words, Tontine is here to support and integrate with your existing marketing/operational workflows, not disrupt it.

Duplicating product pages and sending 50% of all traffic to either/or pages creates a host of issues that will likely cause a significant number of unintended consequences:

  1. Having duplicative pages will hurt your SEO traffic/rankings;
  2. User experience will degrade significantly as there is no consistency in which prices end-customers end up seeing; and
  3. Facebook DPA, Google Shopping, and other product feed-based ads may penalize you for having duplicative product pages (whereas Tontine actively hides either/or page(s) while a test is active).

Tontine handles all the heavy lifting and technical complexities of integrating with Shopify so you can stay focused on growing your business.

Will Tontine scale with my Shopify store?

Absolutely! Tontine’s systems are built to support your growth, and handle conversion traffic for Shopify stores of all kinds — this ranges from mom-and-pop starter stores to household brand names such as Steve Madden, Tamara Mellon, Fashion Nova, and thousands more. In all, more than 280 million shoppers have been involved in Tontine's price tests, and the platform has processed $3+ billion in revenue. In each instance, customers consistently find opportunities to drive additional revenue — and more importantly, profitability growth.

Will Tontine ever sell my Shopify store data? How can I trust you with it?

We will never sell your data, or violate your trust in any way — period. Tontine does not, and will not, access or store any customer data from your store for any reason other than to ensure the basic features of the platform works for you and your dedicated Price Optimization Expert. We have extremely strict policies around accessing your aggregated and anonymized view count/sales data, and will never sell or share it. For more details, feel free to review our plain-English Security and Data Protection page.

Is price testing legal? What laws/regulations around this should I be aware of?

Product price testing is 100% legal in the United States and in most countries worldwide as long as the price discrimination is made on a blanket statistical basis (i.e. like all of the available test configuration options on Tontine) and not targeted based on an audience’s specific personal attributes, such as age, gender, job, protected class status, etc. Tontine’s platform does not support any customization options that allow for the latter to occur, even if by accident.

Larger Fortune 500 companies such as Disney, Uber, Amazon, Walmart, Wayfair, and Target have accepted this business practice and devoted billions of dollars in resources to optimize their “revenue management algorithms” and “dynamic pricing yield”. Tontine’s mission is to offer smaller entrepreneurs the value of an in-house pricing analyst with the click of a button and at a minuscule fraction of the cost.

What kind of support does Tontine provide?

You’re an entrepreneur (or executive) with a million things on your plate at any given moment — we get it. This is why as soon as you sign the Subscription Contract, you’ll be assigned a dedicated Price Optimization Expert who’ll not only help you get set up and integrated (<48 hours), but will also be your wingman on all things pricing. He/she will be able to strategically assist with brainstorming which new price tests to run, implement recommendations from PriceBot, analyze data from completed tests, synthesize digestible yet actionable insights, and more. You can be as involved — or hands-off — as you’d like in your store’s pricing strategy, and still guarantee a successful outcome with Tontine’s Recoup Guarantee™.

Need even more support? Customers on Tontine’s Complete plan are assigned a dedicated Happiness Engineer who can assist with everything from complex technical integrations to customized reporting and analysis. All this with a 20-minute response time SLA.

Will Tontine cause any issues or conflict with my existing workflow, Shopify data, paid ads, affiliate programs, etc.? What kind of third-party apps is Tontine compatible with, and which integrations are supported?

The short answer is no.

One of the benefits of Tontine is that the entire platform is built specifically to support the Shopify ecosystem, including all of its apps, workflows, APIs, integrations, and more. The Tontine app and platform will not modify the way your customers’ order data is transmitted to Shopify/other API’s backend — this includes all revenue, sales, orders, customers, etc. data. In short, you will not face any disruptions with your current workflow because you installed Tontine!

In the unlikely event that Tontine does not natively support an integration/API your store is using, Tontine’s Integration Specialists are always on standby and ready to assist.

Which products should I test first?

The ultimate goal of any price test is to arrive at a result statisticians call “ statistically significant” — in order words, there should be no ambiguity that the results recorded are actually scientifically valid and therefore, actionable.

The best products, variants, SKUs, etc. to test with Tontine are typically your hero products (i.e. the products that are most popular with your customers) for two reasons:

  1. Since these are the most important products you sell, it’s likely also where Tontine can make the biggest difference and “move the needle” for you. One way to think about this is, how many percentage points can you increase your net profits by if you made more on each (hero product) order even with the same number of customers?
  2. By virtue of the fact that these are the most-desired products by your customers, the specific product pages associated with these hero products are also likely to receive more traffic (both in pageviews and uniques) than other pages, and therefore, will allow Tontine to establish a statistically significant result based on our algorithms faster.

By testing your hero products first, you’ll be on the fast track to discovering the value Tontine can deliver for your Shopify business!

Will Tontine slow my Shopify store’s page load speed?

We understand just how important page load speeds are for maximizing conversion rates. Tontine’s proprietary display technique perfectly balances data/browser security with speed — therefore, you can expect less than 0.12 seconds additional delay (<2 Kb) in page load rates!

Are there any upfront costs to working with Tontine?

Nothing that you wouldn’t be made aware of in the most transparent manner — for most customers, the only upfront costs are the three months minimum to get started (contract is 100% month-to-month thereafter) and the one-time implementation fee.

Are there any hidden or variable costs in addition to the subscription fee?

No. All invoices/bills are broken down by line-items so you’ll always be aware and in total control of how much Tontine is charging each month. If/when you decide to engage in a Special Project and/or our VP of Digital Intelligence service, you can always ask for a time/cost estimate prior to making a final decision.

What qualifies as a Special Project?

Any non-routine requests, such as the preparation of custom reporting, establishing best practices documentation, providing additional internal training, managing external vendors, and more. Your Price Optimization Expert will be able to provide you with an estimate of how long each new Special Project will take, as well as how much it’ll cost so you can weigh the benefits and drawbacks prior to starting the project.

Does Tontine only work on Shopify Plus stores?

No, Tontine is designed and built from day one to be inclusive towards Shopify merchants in all stages of growth — therefore, the platform works natively with both Shopify and Shopify Plus stores, and your dedicated Price Optimization Expert is trained to work with either.

I have additional questions!

Great! Please email hello@tontine.ai and one of our Concierge Support team members will respond shortly.

What exactly can I test with Tontine?

While Tontine's platform can handle hundreds of different customizations for each price test, by default, the following variables are supported right out-of-the-box:

  1. Standard product prices;
  2. "Compare at" prices and/or discount amounts;
  3. Subscribe & save discount values;
  4. Any upsell or cross-sell discounts;
  5. Flat shipping fees;
  6. Free shipping thresholds; and
  7. Free shipping vs. paid shipping

Fully understanding that every Shopify store is set up differently, and you may have unique nuances specific to your brand, your Price Optimization Expert will be able to set up different price test configurations not listed above if necessary (of course, always in consultation with you).

Does Tontine work with subscription platforms/products and business models?

Certainly! Tontine's Integration Specialists have extensive experience supporting even the most complex subscription platforms/products and business models. In fact, so much so that Tontine actually supports most subscription third-party platforms and apps (e.g. Recharge, Bold Commerce Subscriptions, etc.) natively through proprietary API integrations. Direct integration with your preferred subscription platform is free and takes less than three days to fully integrate in most cases.

Tontine can test prices at the point of purchase and for customers who have already subscribed (i.e. at the middle of their subscription journey). In the former, we focus on conversion rate maximization; in the latter, we focus on churn minimization.

Can I have multiple products in the same price test?

Yes! There are no limits to the amount of products and variants you can include in a single price test — although it is usually recommended that you only include products that have the same parent SKU or are within the same category together. For example, this is helpful if you want to test a price change across an entire collection of products.

Will I be able to exclude returning customers from being involved in an active price test?

We understand that excluding returning customers from being assigned to a price test is one of the most straightforward ways of mitigating brand risk, in addition to all of the other safeguards Tontine already has in place. Broadly speaking, the answer is yes — Tontine's platform can help you include or exclude specific segments of visitors from any given price test. However, given the inherent nature of price testing and the fact that every Shopify store's set up is unique, there may be other factors to consider. This is a discussion your dedicated Price Optimization Expert will be more than happy to have with you to ensure doing so will not cause any unforeseen issues.

Can Tontine integrate with my headless commerce infrastructure (e.g. Shogun, Contentful, Sanity, etc.)?

Of course! Tontine's Integration Specialists, having worked with more than 2,200+ Shopify brands, are well-versed in most headless commerce stacks and will work with your development team to do all of the heavy lifting related to the integration. The Integration Specialist assigned to your account will usually complete such headless commerce integrations within 7-10 days, and is focused on (a) making sure everything is 100% compatible); and (b) minimizing the amount of development resources you have to allocate to this, since your Integration Specialist will be doing all of the work. During this integration period, your Integration Specialist can work alongside or under the supervision of your development team, and they will be more than happy to provide status updates daily.

Headless commerce integrations do carry a one-time fee that'll be transparently outlined in your subscription contract — this is because headless commerce integrations are incredibly specialized and built from scratch for each customer, and this ensures that your Integration Specialist can devote all the time and resources necessary to guarantee 100% compatibility with your Shopify store's unique setup.
